Custom Pantones: January 12-19, 2023
There is a store in New Orleans (if you just sang that to the tune of “House of the Rising Sun,” I promise I didn’t intend for you to) that sells clever NOLA-themed goods beyond the typical tourist trap souvenir fare. Among these is a series of postcards, stationery, and posters that play off of Pantone color chips by creating their own versions that represent the colors of things that are quintessentially New Orleans. You can see several of these “Nolatones” here.
If you’re not familiar with Pantone, think of the similar paint chips and swatches you get at the hardware store where each color has a unique name meant to evoke a certain feeling or mood.
For this week’s mission, create your own set of Pantone-style color chips, with each color representing something iconic about your city, another city you love, or your home or life in general. Name each color based on what it represents. Submit at least four of these, along with the name of the city or situation you’re representing.

I chose colors for the cities that have meant the most to me throughout my lifetime, highlighting the first things that came to mind when thinking about them. Shame on me tho, I did not find the correct Pantones or numbers to match.
Dayton - I <3 DYT
Cincinnati - sick with good cocktail bars (Somerset, Longfellow, Tiki Tiki Bang Bang)
Indianapolis - sick with good places to eat, and eat poorly (Kuma, La Revolucion, Love Handle)
Cleveland - I will never not think of Great Lakes Brewing
Traverse City - beaches! waves! dunes! storms rolling over the lake! ice cream! poorly decorated rentals!
Geneva-on-the-Lake - Ohio's trashy coast, best enjoyed with big groups of friends
New Orleans - so many feels, but mostly awe and wonder
Grand Rapids - I would move here if only...
Jamaica, Queens - I interned for a wine brand called Floot, and being 22 in NYC, I was always filled with some level of fear
Jackson, MI - cultureless, landlocked wasteland
Yale, MI - hometown of horrors, mostly bad thoughts

Next Week’s Assignment:
Shakespearean Spotify
Take a modern-day song, and re-write it as a sonnet. The song can be any genre you like - pop, country, rap, commercial jingle, whatever - but this will work best if it’s a song that’s fairly well known. Brush up on your Elizabethan language skillz and transform it into something Billy himself (or Francis Bacon) might’ve penned. For bonus points, reverse the assignment and turn a Shakespeare sonnet into a modern-day song!
