Embellished Correspondence: July 7-14, 2022

The Mission:

You’ve got mail art!
Send someone a letter or a package. Decorate the outside of the envelope or package in whatever way you like. Bonus points if the decoration provides clues to the topic of the letter or the contents of the package.
(If the photo you submit shows the name and address of the person you’re mailing to, let me know if you’d like me to try to blur or black out that information when I post it here on the website.)

The Submissions:

“Dog gone it” (say it fast, it becomes dog on it) - by Anonymous Frau Redux

Years ago there was a game show based on picture clues. Felt like I was playing that on this assignment- or being criminally clever like those notes often seen on detective shows.

Using a book of stickers (some of them really unique and not sure how I’ll ever use them appropriately, because I have no idea what they are!) and some stamps I created the correspondence inside and the art clue outside.

Unfortunately the contents of the envelope were not photographed.
See what you think was inside.

Feather
Snail
Pointing finger
Dog
Paw prints
Small jar and spot

Hmmm?

It was a written note to Capt. Quillard on homemade stationary with a photo of my dog next to a Will Rogers statue and sent via snail mail.

Who doesn’t love getting a piece of fun mail?

Envelope contains a New Yorker article I saved about musician Orville Peck (for my friend Kyle who’s a fan).

Later this month, my sister leaves for what looks like an incredible trip to Iceland. I made her a card to wish her “góða ferð,” the Icelandic version of “bon voyage.” For the envelope decoration, I tried to make it look like a traditional Icelandic sweater.

Jane Flair! She’s not dead - she’s just been on a month long vacation! (Seriously. It was awesome.)

Anyway, here is my submission. A colleague needed a last minute letter of rec, and while I was going to make something special for this week’s submission, I’m a damn good letter writer. It’s probably the thing I’m best at, other than being a stone cold weirdo.

Names and locations have been blacked out!

Next Week’s Assignment:

Illustrate the same thing four times using monochromatic, complementary, achromatic, and analogous color schemes. Subject and medium are your choice. More info on each scheme below and here.

Due July 21 by 7:00 p.m.

Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding a darker color, grey or black.

A complementary color scheme is composed by using two colors opposite each other on the color wheel.

Achromatic color schemes use black, white, grey, and other neutral colors in combinations.

An analogous color scheme is three colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel,  with one being the dominant color, which tends to be a primary or secondary color, and two on either side complementing, which tend to be tertiary.
